Smoke and Kielbasa

On September 5, 1993, my friend Tomasz Kolodziejski and I drove from northeast from Krakow to Pinczow to have a look at the excursion train that was operating for the first time that year on the 750mm gauge Jedrzejow system. That summer, the train (known as the "Expres Ponidzie") was leaving Jedrzejow for Pinczow in the morning, then making a trip from Pinczow to the junction at Umianowice and return, and finally making a final trip back to Jedrzejow, pausing for a bonfire at Umianowice. The following 8 images were taken on the trip.

Px48 #1724 was the power for the trip. Here it is seen running backwards just before arrival in Pinczow. (September 5, 1993)

Pinczow was the run-around point for the train. The locomotive also took on water by the station. (September 5, 1993)

The train's buffet car was an unusual vehicle. Since refreshment vehicles are practically unknown on the narrow gauge, it was cleverly converted from a second class coach. (September 5, 1993)

The train crew took it all in stride. Probably more used to running freight than passengers, they exhibited an interest in their new cargo! (September 5, 1993)

The wye at the junction of Umianowice was the site of our bonfire and kielbasa roast. (September 5, 1993)

As the fire burned down, the volume on the buffet car's stereo system was turned up, and the dancing began! (September 5, 1993)

Dancing in field by a steam train is not an everyday occurence anywhere, but after a meal of good kielbasa and the local beer, why not?! (September 5, 1993)

Finally, as the end of the day approached, the "Expres Ponidzie" departed for its home terminal of Jedrzejow. Jedrzejow, adjacent to the standard gauge Krakow-Radom main line, is the location of the main shops for this narrow gauge system. (September 5, 1993)
