Podhale Peculiarities

The locomotive depot at Chabowka, located between Krakow and Zakopane in the south of Poland, is the home to a museum of historic locomotives and cars. The workers at the depot have collected a wide range of cars and locomotives, and are restoring them at a rapid rate, doing a first-class job in the process.

The equipment from the Chabowka museum can often be found at work on excursions and has also been used in the filming of several movies. The most well know occurrence of this was when several Chabowka engines were used in the filming of "Schindler's List." This Ty2, built in Germany during WWII, was in fresh paint ready for filming. It displays the German swastika and wore "Deutsche Reichsbahn" lettering. (February 1993)

For "Schindler's List", Chabowka also supplied several vintage boxcars. A worker was applying German railway lettering to this car prior to filming. (February 1993)

Pan Pawel Zaleski, the director of the Sucha Beskidzka locomotive depot and the driving force behind the Chabowka museum, has restored a PKP "salon," which is often found on excursions operated by Chabowka locomotives. The salon, once part of the prime minister's train, is the European equivalent of a North American "private car." Here a number of railway workers celebrate the end of another successful excursion. Pan Zaleski is the gentleman with the beard. (July 7, 1995)

The Sucha Beskidzka and Chabowka depots supply and maintain many of the electric units used on the line from Krakow to Zakopane and many of the associated branch lines. This EN71 unit was painted in a special paint scheme for use on the Krakow-Zakopane express train, "Kasprowy." (February 1993)
