Train travel in the USA - Comfort on board an Amtrak® train
Comfortable travel is the basis for a successful trip. This is why an unforgettable trip on an Amtrak® train goes hand in hand with high comfort. All the carriages in the train are air-conditioned, seats are comfortable and positioned so that each passenger has a leg rest and far more space than on the plane - and also can freely throughout the train. A feast for the eyes is provided outside the large windows, as you admire the scenery of America passing by.
Traveling around the USA, you will find two types of carriages – those designed for short- and long-distance routes.
Long-distance routes
Trains serving the long-haul routes are extremely spacious. This allows the traveler to spend time sitting comfortably in their seat, and also to move freely around the train. As some journeys last more than 24 hours, it is possible to book a room in a sleeping car. This is the best option for a comfortable, long-distance trip.
Viewliner® carriages
Each train also carries a dining car or a self-service cafe. Passengers can purchase full meals in the dining car, and the cafe serves hot and cold snacks, sandwiches, beer and alcoholic drinks, and a range of cold and hot drinks.
Viewliner sleeping cars* are also available. Roomettes for 1 or 2 persons, and larger bedrooms with en-suite WC and shower for 1-4 persons, along with an accessible bedroom with room for a wheelchair, can be booked. People who are traveling in a group have the opportunity to reserve two adjoining bedrooms. The car also has a shower and toilet for roomette passengers.
The price of a sleeping car ticket includes:
- air conditioning
- an electrical outlet
- small closet
- folding table
- fresh towels and sheets
- all meals in the dining car
- bottled water and morning coffee, tea and juice
* Viewliner sleeping cars are available on these trains: Cardinal, Crescent, Lake Shore Limited, Silver Meteor and Silver Star
Superliner® carriages
These carriages are equipped with large, comfortable seats arranged on two levels: upper and lower. As with the Viewliner carriages, comfortable space with ample legroom is provided for the passenger, along with a personal reading light and a folding table. There is plenty of space for you to move freely around the car, and large windows allow you to enjoy the beautiful views of America outside.
The Superliner dining car has tables on the upper level, where delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served restaurant-style. Everyone can find something for themselves on the menu, which also includes vegetarian dishes.
Most Amtrak Superliner trains carry a Sightseer Lounge carriage. This special car has comfortable seating on upper level, with special floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing you to sit and admire the passing scenery. The lower level of the car carries a cafe, in which you can order hot and cold snacks, sandwiches, beer and alcoholic drinks, and a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages.
Superliner sleeping cars ensure comfort and privacy during travel, with four different types of rooms available:
- The Roomette contains two adult beds. WCs and a shower are located on the lower level of the carriage.
- The Bedroom contains two adult beds, sink, WC and shower.
- The Family Bedroom contains two adult beds and two child beds; WCs and a shower are located on the lower level of the carriage.
- The Accessible Bedroom was specially designed for the needs of the disabled; it contains two adult bed and sufficient space for a wheelchair. There is a wheelchair-accessible WC and sink, separated by a privacy curtain.
The price of a sleeping car ticket includes:

- an electrical outlet
- small closet
- folding table
- fresh towels and sheets
- all meals in the dining car
- bottled water and morning coffee, tea and juice
Short-distance routes
Trains serving short-haul routes have been designed to allow quick travel between the major cities of the United States. They have only standard seats and run only during the day. Travel time does not exceed ten hours. They're as comfortable and spacious as long-haul trains. They are very popular amongst Americans, especially students and businessmen.
Amfleet and Horizon carriages
In short-haul trains, like those adapted to longer routes, seats are tailored to the needs of travelers: sufficiently large and comfortable seats provide enough space so that travelers can stretch out and rest their feet. A folding table gives you the ability to use mobile devices, and personal lights make it easy to read while traveling. All cars are air-conditioned. Traveling between two cities, you can take in the view through the large windows, and enjoy comfort you won't find in air travel.
Most trains also carry a cafe, in which you can order hot and cold snacks, sandwiches, beer and alcoholic drinks, and a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages.
Acela Express®
Travelers can relax and dine with Acela Cafe, serving coffee, drinks and light meals.
Passenger in need of a relaxing environment can book a seat in the special Quiet® carriage.
What makes the Acela Express unique is comfort of the highest quality. Comfortable seats in standard class are arranged so as to provide rest for tired legs. At each seat is a larger than standard folding table allowing use with a laptop, almost like at home. Do not forget there is access to electricity and free AmtrakConnect® WiFi.
In first class, your trip is even more comfortable. Large seats and more space give travelers comfort which is unparalleled with that which you find in airliners and cars.
